Dizzy – Prince of the Yolkfolk!
While it is nearly impossible to avoid the name “Mario” in Nintendo gaming circles, there was also an iconic game character for Commodore 64 owners who spawned several budget software titles. His name was “Dizzy,” from British software developer Codemasters.
The Dizzy series was long-running and very popular in the UK and elsewhere in Europe where cheap games could be had on tape. While many such budget games were disappointing duds, the Dizzy titles were generally solid from what I’ve seen. At first glance Dizzy - Prince of the Yolkfolk! appears to be a platformer like CJ, but it is actually deeper than that. An inventory system that is easy to manage, objects that can be used, and puzzles to be solved by “talking” to various characters throughout the game make it much more than just a platform game. At the same time, skill at jumping and navigating your way through many screens of physical challenges stops the game from becoming a dull item fetch quest, or one where you simply avoid monsters. Of all of the games in this list, this Dizzy game may prove to be the “hook” that gets a new player interested in C64 gaming. Why did I choose this one? This title among the Dizzy titles struck me as more intuitive and easier to play than some of the others. That said, I’ve seen some neat-looking Dizzy collections on sale at auction and some of the titles I have yet to try for myself.
Not sure of how to start with Prince of the Yolkfolk! ? Here’s a tip: pick up and use the items in the first room you’re trapped in to burn down the door.
Dizzy fansites such as http://www.yolkfolk.com/games/official exist but they are not necessarily tied to the C64 since over a dozen Dizzy titles were available on different platforms over the years. There are even fan-created Dizzy titles out there available for download if you can’t get enough of the original titles.
